Game Highlights from the 2009 Season

June 30 - U19 Girls win 3-0! Game night must mean we are in Minnesota (last 4 games played on the road). Indeed, we were in Mendota to play the SAS – Sting and came home with a 3–0 victory. After another 0–0 half of play and some sloppy somewhat physical play the team came together in the second half. Jessica Prock scored from the right side. About ten minutes later Annie Gunderson netted one from about 25 yards out (her first of the year). Allie Tanzer wrapped up the scoring with a goal late in the game for the 3–0 win.

This concludes a stretch of 9 games in 13 days, a record of 7–1–1 including a tournament championship in Eau Claire and we are still undefeated in league play. Four of the last 6 games were shut out victories, in those 6 wins we have only allowed 2 goals. Our defensive line and goalie play have really stepped up to make the difference for this team.

June 29 - The U19 Girls traveled to St. Paul to play the SES Titans and win 4-1. After a half played to a 0–0 tie Emily Passint opened the scoring with a goal. Allie Tanzer followed shortly with a nice 1v1 play by tapping the ball around the goalie and scoring. The Titians pulled to within 1 by scoring on a corner kick but Krista Lambrecht closed the game with two more scores, one on a penalty kick which the goalie deflected and Krista charged the ball and put the ball in the net, giving the team a 4–1 victory.

June 29 - The U11 Striker boys traveled to Minneapolis to take on the Southeast Storm (tied 2-2).  The weather was great for a soccer game. The Strikers started out strong and really worked on their team skills. First goal came from Riley McCanna unassisted. Taylor Bell dropped the second and final goal in for the Strikers. Southeast Storm was able to put two in net to tie the game. The Strikers worked real hard to finish the game, but both teams seemed evenly matched. It was a back and forth nail biter of a game until the end. Johnathan Normand started out as goalie in the first half and Jordan Hayes took his turn in the second. Final: Strikers 2, Southeast Storm 2.

June 26 - The U11 Striker boys fall to the Sting Boys 7-2. Facing an older team, the Strikers took the field looking to play hard soccer. The Sting Boys were able to put 3 into the net before Michael Farrow was able to put one in for the Strikers with vengeance. Sting Boys answered back with two quick goals. Riley Weyandt put the next one in for the Strikers. Sting Boys were able to put 2 more in the net before the end of the game. The Strikers never gave up and made the Sting Boys work for every goal. The Strikers suffered many “unlucky” moments in the game. Johnathan Normand started out in goal with Codie Goettl goal tending the 2nd half. Final: Sting Boys 7, Strikers 2.  Boys from both teams were treated to treated to some fun by the Casper Park sprinklers at the end of the game.

June 25 - The U19 Girls played under the lights in Apple Valley facing the Tjaden team - this was a pretty impressive 1-0 win!  The defense limited Apple Valley to just 6 shots and Chelsea Dusick turned in her 3rd straight shutout in goal. The lone goal of the contest was scored when Megan Schuknecht made a crossing pass into the box from the left side and a streaking Krista Lambrecht came from nowhere past the defender and got to the ball just before the goalie driving it to the back of the net. The girls play next in St. Paul on Monday and in Mendota on Tuesday before we break for the July 4 holiday.

June 25 - The U15 Boys beat the SouthEast Soccer Club (SES) 3-1 at Dorais.  Chippewa and zero win SES started the game out slowly in the first half until Andrew Faris received a ball in front of the net late in the half with only the SES goalie in front of him – the goalie came out and Faris passed the ball back to a speeding in Aaron Bresina who slammed the ball in for the first goal – score 1-0.  SES then scored off a free kick past goalie Jonathon Wollman – score 1-1.  In the second half Jeremy Facklam put the ball in the net on a mishandled SES ball while charging in – score 2-1.  Bresina put his second goal of the game in on a long bouncing kick as the goalie tried to run out for a save – score 3-1.  Bresina and family were a welcome sight back at the soccer field – the team and parents all wish them well in these trying times.  C1 is now solidified for this team, on this win, for the coming 2010 U16 Strikers team - congratulations.  Three games are left on July 6, 7, and 9 to end the season strong – current record 9-0.

June 24 - The u11 Striker’s boys beat St. Paul’s Blackhawks at home 2-1!  The Strikers are really maturing as a team and all the boys are playing for victory. Taylor Bell was able to knock one in to put the Strikers on the board first. Riley McCanna put the next one in for the Strikers. Blackhawk was able to sneak on into net before the end of the game. The Strikers were able to hold onto their lead ending the game 2-1. Riley McCanna was goal tender for the first half with Jay Wolf taking duties for the 2nd. Final score; Strikers 2, Blackhawk 1

June 24 - The U18 Boys improve record to 5-0-1 after beating White Bear Lake 5-2!  It was a beautiful night for soccer at Dorais Field.  Many people came out to the game to remember Zach Lato (U18) and former Striker Evan Bresina.  Before the game, John Warrick led the opening ceremony with his kind words and memory of the boys, which was then followed by a moment of silence.

Fifteen minutes into the game Cory Arneson put the first score on the board but White Bear Lake was quick to respond making it 1-1.  Zac Zubal found Teagen Warrick open and Teags maneuvered his way around a couple defenders and shot a goal right down the middle ending the half 2-1.  Teagen started off the 2nd half with 2 more goals (assist from Phillip Bergmann).  White Bear Lake stayed aggressive and managed to score.  Tye Kreutzfeldt ran the ball down the right side and kicked a perfect pass to Cory who was wide open in the middle and hungry to score - Cory nailed the goal to secure the 5-2 win!

June 23 - The U19 Girls traveled to Minnesota to play the first place SES Sting and won 3–1!  Coming off a strong defensive effort in the Eau Claire tournament championship game, the defense again took charge in both games this week. Our mid-field and defensive line play has limited shot opportunities for the opponents all year; three of the team’s last four games have been shut out victories.  Tuesday it was a hot, humid night in St. Paul. Allie Tanzer converted a breakaway goal to provide a 1–0 lead at halftime. The defense controlled the ball for us and we increased the lead to 2–0 on a score by Emily Passint. SES scored about midway thru the half on a deflected ball (off a player and two of the goal posts) closing the gap to 2–1. Late in the game Emily converted again for the 3–1 victory!!

June 23 - The U11 Girls beat the Hastings team 5-1 at Casper!  After playing 3 very good teams in the Eau Claire tournament, Chippewa started off strong against Hastings – a team at their own level – and looked good on the field with their passing.  Chippewa started the game off early with a couple quick goals by Tyana Loiselle – score 2-0.  Hastings then put one in the net past goalie Katie Faris – score 2-1.  Loiselle then put another goal in the net – score 3-1.  In the second half with Hallie Soward in goal, Chippewa got on the board with Loiselle scoring her 4th goal of the game – score 4-1.  Hastings then put a hard long ball into the net over Soward’s head – score 4-2.  Sam Gardow finished up the scoring for Chippewa to make it 5-2.  Record 6-1-1.

June 22 - The U11 Striker boys beat the White Bear Lake Bears at home 4-1. Unlike the game two weeks ago, summer had arrived. With temperatures in the upper 80s the boys took the field with fiery. First goal for the Strikers came from Michael Farrow unassisted. Riley Weyandt was able to bump one to William Kunkle and then one to Sam Kunkle to make the score 3-0. White Bear Lake was able to put one in goal late in the 1st half. Riley Weyandt put up a beautiful corner kick that arched right into the net. Codie Goettl was goal tender for the first half with Jay Wolf taking the duties during the 2nd. Final score, Strikers 4, Bears 1.

June 19-21: Eau Claire Tournament - U19 Girls take 1st!!!

  • The U15 Boys lost to the U15 Granite City Thunder and to the U16 C1 St. Paul United teams at the Eau Claire tournament in their 2nd and 3rd games.  Though Chippewa had the lead early in both games, the Chippewa boys were very flat with missing their leading tournament scorer the last 2 years (8 of 11 tournament goals) with the tragic passing away of his brother.  Jason Faschingbauer scored the lone goal of the second game – final score 3-1.  Derek Mueller and Andrew Faris (assist - cross by Faschingbauer) scored in the third game to take a 2-0 lead.  The undermanned St. Paul United team (playing 2 down with no substitutions) played well in their first game of the tournament (due to car trouble and forfeiting their first game), while the Chippewa boys could not get going after the bad news of the morning.  St. Paul then scored 4 straight goals, and Chippewa got put one more in from Stephan Kitchen (first goal of the year).
  • The U11 C3 Girls lost 2 games and tied one game in the Eau Claire tournament. The Chippewa girls started off the tournament with the Allouez Stride (1st place in U12 league play) – with the Chippewa parents seeing trouble early with the very big, well organized team.  Though the Chippewa girls held their own most of the game, they lost 4-0.  In the second game against the C3 Blaine Bombers, Chippewa was down 4-2 on goals by Tyana Loiselle and ?????, but came back with 5 minutes to play in the second half on goals by Loiselle and Sydney Faschingbauer to tie up the game – final score 4-4.  In the third game the C2 Blaine Fury came out and scored 6 goals and dominated the game.  Chippewa got on the board with a few minutes to go with a well placed, long goal – final score 6-1.  Overall the tournament was a good experience for the girls with the tough dominating teams.
  • U19 Girls win 1st place in Eau Claire Tournament! The U18 girls provided their fathers with a wonderful gift Sunday by winning the Eau Claire tournament; beating a very physical Cottage Grove team 1 – 0 in the championship game.

The first half was very rough and each team’s defense controlled the pace of the game, neither offense was able to generate serious scoring threats. In the second half the Strikers began to control the mid-field a bit more and generate some offense. Play again got physical but we weathered the storm. About midway through the second half, I am told a parent encouraged his daughter to score a goal for him on Father’s Day, and within 1 minute Jamie Bluemel did just that by scoring off a corner kick which the goalie tried to stop but it went off her hands into the goal. With a 1 – 0 lead and the minutes winding down the Strikers defense took control and thwarted any offensive charges by Cottage Grove. With about 2 minutes remaining Cottage Grove brought forward their goalie in an act of desperation but the defense rose to the challenge and preserved the 1 – 0 victory.

The team advanced to the title game by registering a tie with Eau Claire 2 – 2 Friday evening, losing to Cottage Grove on Saturday morning 2 - 1 and beating NSSA 1 – 0 in the Saturday afternoon game. The entire team played very hard this weekend against some very strong competition, it is hard to single anyone out for exceptional performances but the defensive players really controlled the games for us and Chelsea Dusick provided us with two shutouts (NSSA and the championship game) without these efforts the story would be a bit different. Our tough player of the weekend is without question Jamie Bluemel. She seemed to be targeted by every opposition player but she played her heart out and picked herself off the ground after every tackle with more determination than she had before.

The next game for the Strikers is Tuesday evening in St. Paul against the first place Sting from SES. At this stage in the season the Sting’s only loss came at the hands of the Strikers on June 12.

  • U18 Boys take 2nd place in Eau Claire Tournament!  The U18 boys have dedicated the remainder of their season to their teammate and friend Zach Lato.  Zach was definitely watching over us this weekend at the Eau Claire Tournament.  Game #1: The team was honored to have Zach's dad, Pete, sit on the bench with the team during the game.  The Strikers beat Allouez Arsenal 3-2!  Game #2: It was a very hot afternoon but the Strikers managed to hang on and beat Milwaukee 3-1.  Game #3: The Strikers needed to beat Rhinelander to synch a spot in the Championship game.  With the game tied 2-2 and only ~1 second left in the game, the Strikers surged into Hodag territory, frantic for a goal.  Teagen Warrick was in the right place and the right time, and found the back of the net.  After the game, the Eau Claire United tournament director presented a ball to the U18 Strikers in honor of Zach Lato.  The Strikers will play in the championship game today at 3pm, Field #2...Lato, this game's for you!!!  Championship Game: The U18 Strikers had to play the Eau Claire United Stingers.  The Stingers took the lead 2-0 at halftime.  The Strikers revived themselves during halftime and came back on the field and played with tenacity.  The team really started to click and kicked it up a notch.  Zac Zubal got the ball on the right side and cut in towards the middle and nailed a left-footed kick that went right over the goalie's hands and into the net.  The Strikers found themselves in Stinger territory many times but just couldn't get past the aggressive Stinger defense.  The Strikers did a great job protecting our goal for the remainder of the game, including a great save by Jack Nelson when goalie Tayler Schoenberg slipped and left the goal open.  The game ended 1-2 and each player was awarded a very nice 2nd place trophey...great job U18 Strikers!  Many thanks for Pete Lato for joining the team on the bench for this important game and to Jeanne and BreAnn Lato for attending the game - we miss you Zach and we know you too were there with us.

Game #1 Highlights: Tye goal (Cory Arneson assist), Teagen 2 goals (1 assist Tye), Goalie Taylor Schoenberg had a fabulous game with a ton of saves!!

Game #2 Highlights: Zac Zubal scored with his new magical shoes, Teagen goal (assist Zac), Cory goal.

Game #3 Highlights: Tye scored 2 goals, Teagen 1 goal.

Championship Game: Zac Zubal 1 goal.

June 19 - The U15 Boys tied the U15 Eau Claire United C1 team in the first game of the Eau Claire tournament.  Eau Claire scored the first two goals of the game as three of Chippewa’s boys sat because of ankle injuries.  The first Eau Claire goal was a corner that curved into the goal over goalie Jonathon Wollman’s head.  The second was a nice goal by Eau Claire’s Ian Smith that was hit in hard around the Chippewa’s defenders.  At this point Chippewa brang in their wounded warriors and got a quick score by Aaron Bresina as he scored off a breakaway from a pass from Derek Mueller (assist).  End of 1st half – score 2-1 Eau Claire.  In the second half Aaron Bresina scored again on a breakaway (assist Jeremy Facklam) – score 2-2.  Bresina had many other chances to score on breakaways, but could not put the ball in the net.  Goalie Wollman played well in the net, after the defense got off to a bad start.

June 18 - The U19 Girls played their first game at Dorais field Thursday evening against the NES Lightning and won 3 - 2! Mid-way through the first half Ellie Leinenkugel netted a deflection off the goal keeper to provide a 1 – 0 lead. NES tied the score late in the first half. Mid-way in the second half NES scored again on a lofting kick which eluded the outstretched arms of Emily Mohr. Down 2 – 1 the Strikers picked up the pace and pressured offensively by creating many scoring opportunities but the NES goalie played well. Late in the game the pressure paid off. Karley Nyhus provided Ellie Leinenkugel with a nice chip pass over the defenders head which she converted to even the score. Minutes later Ellie had a breakaway and beat the goalie for the go ahead goal. The Strikers defense and mid-field really played a great game holding NES to just 4 shots on goal.

This was a gutsy come from behind victory for the team.

June 18 - The U11 Girls beat the Hudson team 3-1 at Hudson in a warm, muggy game.  Chippewa started the game off not slow with missing 4 of the older girls (2 of their 3 top scorers), but Hallie Soward (assist Haley Pynch) started off the scoring of a pass by Pynch – score 1-0.  In the second half, Sydney Faschingbauer got on the board with a nice hard goal (assist Soward) that the goalie bobbled and dropped in for a goal.  Soward (assist Faschingbauer) then scored to put the game away – score 3-0.  Hudson got on the board with a score on a breakaway down the center of the field to make it 3-1 and showed a little pop for a few minutes.  But with constant hustle, defense, and runs down the field by Pynch, Sabrina Bomback, Katie Faris, Koehler Gerlach, Sara Oliver, Chaz Ann Olson, and especially Maisie Wingert, the girls stopped all of Hudson’s advances.  The three Chippewa coaches kept a constant stream of substitutions moving in and out of the game to keep the 10 girls fresh.  Samantha Smith played her first full game of goalie work, and made multiple excellent saves.  Record 5-1-1.

June 16 - The U11 Girls beat the Mahtomedi team 9-1 at Casper in the softly falling warm rain.  Chippewa started the game off with three quick scores - two by Tyana Loiselle with, and one goal by Sabrina Bomback (first of the season) - score 3-0. Rachel Kopp finished the half with a goal off a pass by Loiselle (assist) - score 4-0.  The second half started off with Sydney Faschingbauer putting the ball nicely in the net off a low cross by Chaz Ann Olson (assist) - score 5-0.  Mahtomedi finally got on the scoreboard with a breakaway - score 5-1.  Loiselle continued the scoring with a run up the middle of the field - score 6-1.  Faschingbauer then put her second goal of the night in the net off a pass from Koehler Gerlach (assist) - score 7-1.  Allison Kexel then scored her first goal of the year - score 8-1.  Samantha Smith finished up the scoring with a goal of a pass from Gerlach (assist).  Smith and Katie Faris played excellent goal-keeping in the respective halves.  The rest of the girls all hustled the whole game with Maisie Wingert, Sara Oliver, Haley Pynch, and Olson making multiple defensive stops and runs up the field.  Record 4-1-1.

June 16 - The U15 Boys marched onward by beating the Cottage Grove Soccer Team 2-1 in the rain on a small field to stay unbeaten at 8-0!  Cottage Grove came into the game down 4 boys on their roster from red cards in previous games.  Austin Birch scored the first goal from way outside the 18 – score 1-0.  Aaron Bresina scored on an awesome header in the corner off from a cross from Derek Mueller – score 2-0.  Cottage Grove then broke through the defense and scored – score 2-1.  The boys played great in the first half, but seemed to tire in the second half.  David Lynch took a hard shot to the face from a free kick (he was in the wall) and had to get off the field because of a bloody nose.  Mark Pearson (goalie) had 7 saves and a few run outs to kick the ball to stop Cottage Grove’s offense.  Record 8-0.

June 13 - The U18 boys beat NLS Fury 6-1.

June 12 - The U19 Girls played their second game in as many days on Friday evening at Halmstad field – win 2-1! The undefeated SES Sting was in town for a game which proved to be a very physical nail biter. The first half was a well played battle ending 0 – 0, each team had opportunities but the defense and goalies controlled the game. In the second half Jamie Bluemel scored off a direct kick from about 25 yards on the left side. Following the score we settled into another physical defensive struggle but with about 10 minutes remaining the Sting managed to score and tie the game. A flurry of offensive runs erupted after that and with about 5 minutes remaining Emily Passint was taken down in the penalty box on a clear scoring opportunity. She converted the penalty kick providing the winning goal as the Strikers defense settled in and killed off any threat in the closing minutes. This was a hard fought game and well played by both teams. The Strikers travel to Mpls to play the other team from SES on Tuesday and host a game next Thursday at Dorais Field at 7:00 PM.
